The 6000 Year Old Wood from the AONB North Pennines

The 6000 Year Old Wood from the AONB North Pennines

I was given this piece of wood by Ann who saw the work I was doing. It is from a layer of the peat bogs of the North Pennines which have been dated to 6000 years ago. The wood is very light to hold, and I was fascinated by how it burned as although it seemed very dry, it appeared to give off what looked like moisture. It burned very quickly and unevenly so it then became a contoured surface so it isn't easy to get a detailed print. But it's so special and I show it to so many people who visit my studio.
